Each computer has a network address, called an IP address. This allows users to exchange data with other computers.
These addresses are made up of 4 sets of three characters each set having a value between 0 and 255.
As these addresses are difficult to memorize, domain names can be used to find a computer on a network
instead of an IP address.
How is a domain name composed?
A domain name is a group of alpha numeric characters (digits or letters) followed by an extension.
This extensions defines the concerned nominating space. The best known extension is .com. But,
there are more than 300 extensions. They are classified in two families: one called 'regional' and the
other called 'generic'. The regional grouping corresponds to the country code defined by the UN.
Each country has it's own: .fr for france, .be for belgium etc... Some countries have the chance to
have a code which express something in english. It is the case for the Tuvalu islands with the.'wanted' tv.
Each country normally has its own Network Information Center, managing the area concerning IP
addressing and allocating rules. There are as many allocating rules as there are different NICs. Some of
these NICs create sub-categories to be used for different activities. For example,The UK NIC created the .co.uk
for commercial activities. In France, there are over 20 sub-categories.
The generic extensions currently in use are: .com .net .org, and more the recently added: .biz, .info, .name, .coop, .museum, .aero, .pro.
These extensions ensure a global presence.
Why should I register one or more domain names?
A domain name is an area that allows a company, an organization, or an association to communicate effectively
regarding its services, products or other information, and also helps to promote a name or brand.
A domain name can be easily remembered, allowing anyone with an internet connection to access your web site
and e-mail. This expands your identity and increases your presence in the marketplace.
Which extension should I choose ?
You can choose, according to the availability, one or several domain names.
For a company, the generic extension as .com or .biz, if available ensures a global
presence and reinforces the international image of your activity. At the opposite end of
the spectrum, a local extension inspires the confidence of local visitors. 'Think globally,
act locally'.? Our advice is to register one or more generic extensions, and to decline the
registration under local ones. It is possible to adapt the content, language etc. to the targeted
market. But also keep in mind, that local extensions can inspire the confidence of the local visitor.
What to do with a domain name?
A domain name allows you to utilize several web sites or redirect your e-mails to a another
e-mail address. Once your name registered, you can choose the hosting solution which suits
your needs. (e-commerce, online services, etc.)
What can I do with a name if my brand is already registered?
There are several alternatives: If the person who has registered your brand does not have legal
rights to your name, you can plan proceedings. Or attempt to purchase your desired name back.
However, this procedure is expensive. The good alternative would be a local registration if you do
not have international interests, or a registration under one of the new extensions. You can also
use a variation on your name. For example, if your company is named yoghurt, you may register
yoghurt-sa-.com, if yoghurt.com is already registered.
How to know whether a domain name is available?
It is a waste of time to type your desired address into a web browser to see if a web site already exists;
a domain name may be registered, but not have a web site. A much more efficient method is to use
our search tool to check name availability. Do not include www before the name when searching.
How can I find out who owns a certain domain name?
To find out who owns a certain domain name, you must use a tool called WHOIS, WHOIS allows for multi-extension verification.
How to register a domain name?
To register a domain name, please check the availability of the name you would like to register,
then follow the order process step by step. NOTE: certain extensions require documentary evidence for registration.
Should I register several domain names?
Yes, there are many valid reasons to have multiple domain names.
Our support center is available to address your specific questions and concerns.
Local presence: You can register your web site in the countries you want to develop
customer relations, or translate your web site into another language. These additional registrations
ensure protection for your company, even if you do not use them right away.
Capture the audience : You can register your name using syntax or phonetic variations.
This is very important if the spelling of your name is not instinctive. You will be able to redirect your
visitors to your other web site. Much of the time, a web address is conveyed orally, so mistakes are possible.
Target the audience : You can also register your products names, or specific services in order to create a target audience.
Protect your brand : Some extensions or variations of your name can be registered by cyber squatters who will capture
your audience and undermine your image. Consult our audit and registration service.
Can I completely protect my brand from cyber squatters?
A complete registration under all extensions and on all variations is unlikely, but a balance
can be found according to your vulnerability to these risks. The risked extensions must be
protected and the strategy must be completed with a regular audit, in order to keep track of
any use by third parties.
How should I manage my domain names?
A domain name is registered from 1 to ten years with exact start and end dates.
As your domain name portfolio increases, having complete visibility of your portfolio
is absolutely necessary.
